Film School

Posted on: 2023-07-10 Film School

The aim of my project is to create a film hub on campus that links the south west side with current and future hotspots across the university.

It will be a mixed-use sustainable building that provides private and well thought out spaces for film teaching and development whilst also hosting public meeting areas and events.

The design is based around the relationship between the studio and cinema boxes. The workshops, control rooms and teaching spaces serve the studio space and there is a visual awareness between the production (studio) and viewing (cinema) Section

Heat recovery and rainwater collection systems ensure the building is sustainable. For materiality the film school uses a frosted glass curtain wall wrapped around a glulam structure.

The frosted glass was inspired by the kalwall glazing opposite the site on the university sport centre and also by some of Shigeru Ban’s work. The reasoning behind this was to put emphasis on the limestone studio within the building that can be seen with transparent glazing on the north facade. Ultimately the vision was two heavy limestone boxes encased in light, glazed, box.
